Lisa Bourke

Meet Lisa Bourke, the content queen behind Content Hive, a top Aussie content marketing agency. With multi-million-dollar brand experience, she’s the digital mastermind behind award-winning campaigns that rocked the nation. Despite being a mum of two, and losing her dad, she’s built her own doors and helped businesses do the same. COVID couldn’t stop her – she’s now a pro at leading remote teams.

2.30 Lisa talks to Lauren about some of the significant moments that led her to start her own business:

  • In her first job, Lisa had strong anxiety about public speaking during work presentations. Desiring autonomy over this, she decided to launch her own business after six months on the job.
  • She spent the last decade building doors for herself, and is now in a position where she’s in control of her career and lifestyle.

4.20 Lauren asks Lisa what it’s like to run a business in her thirties while being a mum at the same time:

  • Lisa spent her twenties gaining knowledge and skills, so that when she reached her thirties and started a family, she would have a clear vision of what she wanted to achieve professionally.
  • Having effective systems and processes is the only way to ensure efficient operations.
  • Lisa firmly believes in delegating tasks and working with a competent team, to support the growth of her business and give her time with her family.

8.17 Lisa talks to Lauren about what it’s like to run a remote team:

  • In her first job, Lisa’s initial recruit was a web developer who was also a student. Working remotely enabled him to balance work and other obligations. This experience showed her that remote teams can be successful if the right people are involved.
  • A task management platform facilitates organisation and centralisation of information. Additionally, communication platforms promote transparency and interaction, fostering an office-like environment.
  • Lisa extends a warm invitation to her coffee commune hot desk located at her residence. This space serves as a refuge for members who desire social interaction or as a site for face-to-face meetings.

12.06 Struggling with imposter syndrome, anxiety, and fear of public speaking, Lisa tells Lauren about her drive to continue to say yes despite these inner fears.

14.30 Lisa opens up about what it’s like to run a business when dealing with grief:

  • The loss of her father was difficult, and it felt like nothing mattered anymore. However, when you are self-employed, you cannot halt operations, even if you want to. Without you, the business cannot function. With bills to pay, clients awaiting service, and employees depending on you, you must persevere.
  • During challenging times, transparency is vital. Being candid with your team and clients generates unexpected support.

20.32 Having kids while running a business is not easy, but Lisa wants her kids to be a part of it – to see that she’s working hard, but that she’s also making time for them. Because, at the end of the day, work is important, but family is the most important.

33.30 Lisa aims to leave a meaningful legacy by giving back, educating, and empowering individuals residing in regional and remote areas, demonstrating that where you live does not determine your potential.

35:00 It’s time for the rocket round where Lisa answers some of Lauren’s personal questions, and guess what… we have another cat lover!
